Kate Steinle’s trial caught everyone’s attention because the man that is accused of shooting and killing her turned out to be an illegal immigrant that was already been five times deported. Many pinned the blame for what happened on San Francisco for releasing the shooter, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, without notifying immigration officials.
Many were shocked that Zarate was acquitted in the murder earlier this week. At this point, a Republican congressman is taking matters into his own hands to introduce a bill to threaten elected officials for protecting illegals from deportation.
Indiana Rep. Todd Rokita is going to introduce his bill next week. It hits elected officials with a $1 million fine and up to five years in prison if convicted. The bill is named “Stopping Lawless Actions of Politicians Act” – “SLAP”.
Rokita told Fox News:
“Politicians cannot be allowed to pick what laws to comply with. American citizens are dying because they sworn to uphold the law refuse to do so.
It’s high time the federal government starts enforcing immigration laws and holding accountable anyone that conspires to break them.”
Acting ICE Director Tom Homan weighed in on the Steinle verdict:
“I was in shock for a good 15-20 minutes. I was sickened. This is not the country I grew up in. It is ridiculous for a city to knowingly release a public safety threat back into the public.
Their goal is to fund sanctuary cities in order to keep illegal aliens in and still do not want to fund the border wall to keep them out. If you ask me, that’s backwards.”
If passed, the bill could play a large role in ending the continued popularity of sanctuary cities.
