Sessions was testifying on his meetings with Russian officials and the Uranium One deal when Rep. Trey Gowdy hijacked the hearing and delivered an impassioned speech on the meaning of “justice”.
He pointed out that the Department of Justice is an independent organization, but is not treated as such – both the Obama Administration and the Trump Administration have unfortunately used it as a political tool.
“You have been asked was it appropriate for the president to weigh in in on an ongoing investigation.”
“It is not. It’s not now it was not when Obama did it in the IRS targeting scandal. It was not when Obama did it in the ongoing investigation into Hillary’s server. It is never appropriate for a president to do such thing.”
This is what Sessions said:
“We are going to do our work according to the principles of the Department of Justice and won’t be infected by politics or bias.
We’re not going to use it to advance a political agenda. When the years go by, people won’t say this Department of Justice did not crumble.”
The DOJ is supposed to be a neutral organization no matter who they are investigating or prosecuting.
